ABPP: American Board of Professional Psychology.

ASPPB: Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.

APA: American Psychological Association.

APIT: Authorization to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology as issued by the PSYPACT Commission.

CPA: Canadian Psychological Association.

CPQ: Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology.

DDS: ASPPB’s Disciplinary Data System.

Behavior Analyst: An individual trained to practice behavior analysis that has met criteria established by the board.

EPPP: Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

Exemption: Exempt from the requirement to be licensed.

IPC: Interjurisdictional Practice Certificate.

Jurisdiction: Refers to the regulatory bodies throughout Canada and United States within which authority may be exercised (e.g., State, District of Columbia, province, or territory).

Licensure by Endorsement: Licensure based on certain credentials (e.g., CPQ, ABPP, or NR).

Licensure by Experience: Applicants for licensure who receive special consideration based on the number of years of experience as a licensed psychologist in another jurisdiction.

NR: National Register of Health Service Psychologists.

PEP: Practice Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

Probation: Defined by the ASPPB Committee on Disciplinary Issues (CODI) as a disciplinary action taken by the licensing entity that allows the individual’s right to practice to continue, but with terms and conditions added to protect the public during that time of probation.

Psychologist: An independent practitioner of psychology.

Psychological Associate: An individual who is licensed for the independent or supervised practice of psychology holding a master’s degree in psychology.

PSYPACT: Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact.

Prescriptive Authority: A licensed psychologist who obtains the authority to prescribe medications if the psychologist has met certain requirements.

Regional Accreditation: Applies to an institution of higher education that was, at the time the degree was awarded, regionally accredited by bodies approved by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Office of Education, or a university recognized by Universities Canada, formerly known as Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

Reprimand: Defined by the ASPPB Committee on Disciplinary Issues (CODI) as a disciplinary action that constitutes public admonishment by the licensing entity. Residency: Means physical presence, in person, face-to-face, at an educational institution granting the doctoral degree for the purposes facilitating acculturation in the procession, the full participation and integration of the individual in the education and training experiences and includes faculty-student interaction. Training models that rely exclusively on physical presence for periods of less than one (1) (e.g., Multiple long weekends and/or summer intensive sessions), or that use video teleconferencing or other electronic means as a substitute for any part of the minimum requirement for physical presence at the institution do not meet this definition of residency.

Revocation: Defined by the ASPPB Committee on Disciplinary Issues (CODI) as a disciplinary action that takes away licensure or registration by the licensing entity; however, in some instances, the individual may reapply for licensure at a later time.

School Psychologist: An individual trained in school psychology that has met criteria established by the board.

Suspension: Defined by the ASPPB Committee on Disciplinary Issues (CODI) as a loss of licensure or registration by the licensing entity for a defined period of time or, in some cases, an indefinite period of time, in order for the suspension to be lifted, often other conditions must be met.

TAP: Temporary Authorization to Practice as issued by the PSYPACT Commission.

Temporary Practice: An individual licensed to practice psychology at the doctoral level in one jurisdiction may practice psychology into another jurisdiction for a specific period of time without obtaining full licensure.
